Pear Mix (Red D’Anjou, Bosc, Moonglow)

Grower: Dawson’s Orchard

Store:  Pears ripen from the inside out, so by the time the outside is soft and ripe the inside may be overripe. Ripe pears should be stored in the refrigerator. Leave unripe pears at room temperature to induce ripening. To determine if the pear is ripe, press the neck of the pear by applying gentle pressure with your thumb to the stem end of the fruit. Once it gives slightly it is ready to eat.

Sweet Potatoes

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Hidden Valley Farm)**

Store: Store potatoes in cool, dark, well-ventilated space like a basement or garage. Sweet potatoes can store well for up to six months like this. Do not refrigerate.

Recipe: Garlic Butter Smashed Sweet Potatoes with Parmesan Cheese, Spiced Herb Roasted Sweet Potato Wedges, Spicy Honey-Glazed Chicken and Sweet Potato Kebabs

 

Shallots

Grower: Gid’s Produce

Store: Shallots can last a month stored in dark, cool location with ventilation.  Don’t store in a plastic bag, and keep away from potatoes. Once cut, store in the refrigerator sealed in a container or plastic bag.

Stripetti Squash

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Hill Top Farm)**

Store: Store Stripetti Squash is a cool, well-ventilated area for up to three months. Wrap cut pieces in plastic and refrigerate for up to five days.

Acorn Squash

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Hill Top Farm)**

Storage: Store squash in a cool, dry place for up to three months. Refrigeration can make the squash spoil more quickly, but it can be stored in the fridge for one to two weeks. Once cut, squash should be tightly wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the fridge for up to a week.

Apple Cider

Grower: Kistaco Farm

Store: Refrigerate for up to two weeks.

Poblano Peppers

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Hidden Valley Farm)**

Store: Place fresh peppers in a brown paper bag in the crisper section of the refrigerator. Peppers will store well for up to a week.

Honeycrisp Apples

Grower: Kistaco Farm

Store: Store apples in the vegetable crisper for up to a month with or without a plastic bag.

Snack Peppers

Grower: Gid’s Produce

Store: Store unwashed and whole in a bag or container bin in the refrigerator. Once cut, store in a plastic bag and use within a few days. Peppers can be sliced, flash frozen and bagged for long term freezing.

Red Beets

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Daniel Miller Farm)

Store: Store beets without their tops loose in an unsealed plastic bag in the fridge. Kept from moisture, they will last for weeks up to a couple of months. If the greens were attached, wrap them loosely in damp paper towel and keep in the crisper; the greens will last for about half a week.

Hydroponic Lettuce

Grower: Harmony Grove

Store: Store wrapped in a paper towel in a plastic bag in the vegetable crisper for up to two weeks. Replace paper towel when it becomes saturated with water.

Heirloom Tomato

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Tobie Schmucker Farm)**

Store: Store at room temperature on a plate, out of direct sunlight. Don’t refrigerate or tomato will become mealy. Wash and core before use.

Green Kale

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Hidden Valley Farm)**

Store: Wrap kale in a paper towel and place in an air-tight plastic bag in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Kale will keep well for up to a week.

Eggplant

Grower: Harvest Valley Farm

Store: Wrap eggplant in a paper towel, place in plastic bag and refrigerate in the crisper section. Use within 5-7 days.

Garlic

Grower: Blue Goose Farm

Store: Store in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area. Will keep this way for several months, but once you remove cloves from a bulb the garlic’s lifetime decreases more quickly.
