Store: Store squash in a cool, well-ventilated area for up to three months. Wrap cut pieces in plastic and refrigerate for up to five days.

Recipe: Roasted Kabocha SquashMaple Roasted Buttercup Squash, Butternut Squash Fritters, Cheesy Garlic Parmesan Spaghetti Squash, Sausage and Apple Stuffed Acorn Squash, Maple Bacon Butterkin Squash

Braeburn Apples/Crimson Crisp Apples

Grower: Dawson’s Orchards/Kistaco Farm

Store: Refrigerate apples in the crisper in a plastic bag with holes in it. Use up old or damaged apples and store apples separately as the ethylene gas they produce can help speed up the decay process of other fruits and vegetables.

Shallots

Grower: Gid’s Produce

Store: Shallots can last a month stored in dark, cool location with ventilation.  Don’t store in a plastic bag, and keep away from potatoes. Once cut, store in the refrigerator sealed in a container or plastic bag.

Sweet Onions

Grower: Blue Goose Farm

Storage: Whole dry bulb onions should be kept in a cool, dry, dark place with plenty of air movement. Do not store onions in plastic! Lack of ventilation will reduce their storage life. Refrigeration is only necessary when trying to extend the shelf life of sweet or mild onion varieties with high water content, but be sure to use a low humidity setting, they must be kept dry.

Curly Parsley

Grower: Gid’s Produce

Store: To store, snip off the ends and place in a jar with a small amount of water for up to a week. If storing in the refrigerator, store in jar with water with a plastic bag over top.

Recipe: Easy Potato Pancakes with Chives and Parsley, Parsley and Garlic Butter, see carrots and potatoes for additional parsley uses

Daikon Radish

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Hidden Valley Farm)**

Store: Daikon is quite perishable, so if serving it raw try to use it within 4 days of purchase. If cooking daikon, it can be stored up about a week. Keep it in a perforated plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.  Keep purple radishes in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer, use within a week.

Red Baby Kale

Grower:Clarion River Organics (Riverbend Acres)**

Store: Store kale in the refrigerator, but in the coldest part of the fridge. Kale tends to get more and more bitter the longer it is left at room temperature, so keep it cool.  You can tightly wrap it in a paper towel and then place it in an air-tight bag

Sweet Potatoes

Grower: Clarion River Organics (Hidden Valley Farm)**

Store: Avoid storing sweet potatoes in the refrigerator, which will produce a hard center and unpleasant taste. Instead, store your sweet potatoes in a cool, dry, well ventilated container. For best results, store them in a basement or root cellar away from strong heat sources. Your sweet potatoes can store for up to two weeks if stored properly.
