Basil Plant
Grower: Pucker Brush Farm
Care: Basil grows well in warm environments that receive about six hours of sun each day. Give basil water when the soil is dry to the touch, doing your best to water the plant at its base and not all over its leaves.
**The basil plants will not be in the CSA boxes, they will all be in a separate box, please be sure to grab a plant in addition to your CSA box.
Salanova Lettuce Mix
Grower:Daniel Lengacher Farm (Clarion River Organics) Certified Organic
Store: Put your lettuce into a nice big bowl, and drape a paper towel or two over the top so moisture doesn’t settle on the leaves while your salad sits in the fridge. Cover the whole thing with a really tight seal of plastic wrap, and store.
Chioggia Beets
Grower: Riverbend Acres (Clarion River Organics) Certified Organic
Store: Store the leaves in a separate plastic bag and use within two days. The root bulbs should also be bagged and can be stored in the refrigerator crisper drawer 7 to 10 days.
Recipe: Raw Chioggia Beet Salad, Roasted Chioggia Beets, Dill Beet Chickpea Salad
Scallions
Grower: Riverbend Acres (Clarion River Organics) Certified Organic
Store: Place your green onions in a jar with a bit of water. Then cover them with a plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator
Recipe: Scallion Pancakes, Scallion Cream Cheese, Chicken and Scallion Lettuce Wraps
Zucchini (green & yellow)
Grower: Gid’s Produce
Store: To store zucchini in the fridge, keep the squash whole, dry and unwashed. Store them in a plastic or paper bag with one end open to encourage air circulation, and pop them in the refrigerator crisper drawer.
Recipe: Zucchini Fritters, Baked Parmesan Zucchini Rounds, Chocolate Chip Zucchini Banana Bread
Kale (members will receive red russian, red curly, or green curly kale)
Grower: Clarion River Organics/Kistaco Farm
Store: Wrap the bunch of kale in a layer of paper towels, and store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper drawer.
Recipe: Garlic Parmesan Kale & Pasta, Kale & Egg Breakfast Cups, Chickpea Kale Salad
Garlic Scapes
Grower: Riverbend Acres/Blue Goose Farm
Store:Garlic scapes keep well in a plastic bag in the fridge for two to three weeks. They will keep for a few days (and will look beautiful) in a glass with a little cool water in it, on the counter in a cool room. Change water daily.
Recipes: Garlic Scape Pesto, Shrimp & Garlic Scape Scampi, Garlic Scape & Cheddar Biscuits
Hydroponic Lettuce
Grower: Harmony Grove Farm
Store: Leave the heads intact and unwashed until you use them. Then, place them in the crisper drawer in your fridge with some paper towels. They’ll absorb any excess moisture, so your lettuce doesn’t spoil prematurely. Lettuce bruises easily, so be careful not to shove other foods up against it. Using a storage container is better than a bag, which can end up squished against other items.
Cucumbers
Grower: Hidden Valley Farm (Clarion River Organics)** Certified Organic
Store: Wrap each cucumber individually in a paper towel, then put all cucumbers wrapped in paper towels inside the plastic bag. Put the plastic bag with the cucumbers in a refrigerator and keep for a week.
Recipes: Tangy Cucumber Salad, 58 Ways to Use Cucumbers, Lemony Cucumber CousCous Salad
Kohlrabi
Grower: Blue Goose Farm
Store: Scrub the kohlrabi bulbs clean, wrap them loosely in a plastic or paper bag, and refrigerate until you’re ready to use them. Fresh kohlrabi will last up to several weeks in the fridge.
Recipes: Roasted Kohlrabi, Kohlrabi Fritters, Kohlrabi and Carrot Slaw
Swiss Chard
Grower: Blue Goose Farm
Store: Do not wash Swiss chard before storing as the exposure to water encourages spoilage. Place chard in a plastic storage bag and wrap the bag tightly around the chard, squeezing out as much of the air from the bag as possible. Place in refrigerator where it will keep fresh for up to 5 days.
Recipes: Spicy Rainbow Chard with Bacon & Polenta, Sesame Ginger Wraps, Rainbow Chard & Mushroom Quiche
Escarole
Grower: Gid’s Produce
Store: Store unwashed with a dampened paper towel in a perforated plastic bag and refrigerate. By changing the towel occasionally and keeping it damp, you’ll be able to store the greens for up to a week. Freezing: Greens freeze well. Wash, then blanch for 3 minutes, drain and plunge into ice water
Recipe: Sauteed Escarole with Garlic & Parmesan, Chickpeas with Escarole & Caramelized Onions, Spaghetti with Pancetta & Escarole
