bartlettYellow Bartlett Pears

Grower:  Dawson’s Orchards

Store:  At room temperature and allow a few days to ripen.  This article has very helpful information about pears:  how to store and ripen pears   

Recipe: poached pear and brie salad  pear and gargonzola flatbread  roasted brussel sprouts and pairs

Grower:  Nu Way Farm  

Store: In a bag in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. 

Use: A mildly bitter and peppery green used in salads or lightly sauteed with olive oil.

Recipe: grilled tomato with feta and mizuna  mizuna salad with roasted cauliflower

Red_OnionRed Onions

Grower:  Clarion River Organics

Store:  Keep in a cool, dry, dark place with plenty of air movement. Do not store onions in plastic. Lack of ventilation will reduce their storage life. Refrigeration is only necessary when trying to extend the shelf life of sweet or mild onion varieties with high water content, but be sure to use a low humidity setting, they must be kept dry.

Store: Keep eggplant in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, and use it as soon as possible. You can place it in a vented bowl, but avoid sealing it in a plastic bag, which can increase decay.

Grower:  Nu Way Farm

Store: Keep them cool, not cold.  When you refrigerate tomatoes, any ripening you want them to do will stop because of the cold.  Unless your tomatoes are very ripe and you’re going to eat them quickly, keep them out of the refrigerator. 

Recipe:  garlic roasted cherry tomatoes  cherry tomato and basil spread

Grower: Nu Way Farm or Weeping Willow Farm

Store: At room temperature on a plate not in plastic, keep out of sunlight.  Keep in mind that storing in a refrigerator can make tomatoes mealy and the skin dry. If you find that your tomatoes are not yet ripe, let them ripen on your counter top for a few days.

Grower: Dawson’s Orchards

Store:  Store at room temperature out of direct sunlight to ripen.  Keep an eye on them as they can ripen quickly.

Grower: Kistaco

Store: At room temperature until ripe.  Remove them from their plastic bag (if it doesn’t have ventilation holes) and keep them out of direct sunlight.  It takes about 3-4 days to ripen.  After ripe, store them in the refrigerator.

Grower:  Blue Goose Farm (CNG)

Store:  Store unwashed beans in a reusable container in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.  They should keep for 7-10 days.

Store: Store in a cool, dark place with good ventilation.

Store: Rinse and dry in a lettuce spinner.  Then wrap the chard in a paper towel or cloth and store in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator.  

Recipe:  quinoa with chard, garlic and tomatoes

Store: Refrigerate peppers, unwashed, in a plastic bag in the vegetable drawer. Keep them dry, as moisture will eventually cause them to rot.

Recipe:   basil goat cheese stuffed peppers  quinoa pepper salad  pepper relish

Grower:  Weeping Willow Farm

Store:  Refrigerate peppers, unwashed, in a plastic bag in the vegetable drawer. Keep them dry, as moisture will eventually cause them to rot.
