**The extremely cold winter wiped out this year’s peach crop in western Pennsylvania so our growers have been working with out-of-state growers to fill the gap.  The peaches you will receive in this week’s share were purchased from a farm in West Virginia.

Blue Goose Farm or River View Farm

Store:  Place leeks in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.  They will stay fresh up to two weeks.

Recipe:  Artichoke, Leek and Potato Casserole

Store: Place celery in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator.

Hostetler Farm 

Store:  Cut the greens from the roots and store in separate plastic bags in the refrigerator.  The greens are edible and delicious.

Clarion River Organics

Store:  Whole watermelons may be stored outside the refrigerator in a cool, dark place.  Once cut, place plastic wrap over the cut edge and store remaining watermelon in the fridge for up to four days.

Kistaco Farm**

Store:  Peaches should be stored at room temperature until they have become fully ripe.  Once they have ripened they will stay fresh another week in the refrigerator.

Tomatillos

Sunny Meadow Farm 

Store:  Leave husks intact and store in the refrigerator.  Remove the husks and rinse tomatillos when you’re ready to use them.

Recipe:  Scrambled Eggs with Tomatillos

Store:  Place dry, unwashed chard in an airtight plastic bag in your refrigerator.  If the chard begins to wilt, submerge the wilted greens in cold water and keep in the refrigerator overnight.

Store:  Keep lettuce in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.  If the lettuce is wet, place a paper towel in the bag to absorb some of the moisture.

Green Peppers

Store:  Keep peppers in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.  They should stay fresh for 1 – 2 weeks.

Store:  Store jalapeños in a paper bag in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.  If you find that they are too spicy for your taste, remove the seeds and ribs before using them.  Wear nylon or latex gloves when chopping jalapeños to avoid burning your skin.

New Potatoes

Clarion River Organics or Weeping Willow Farm

Store:  These freshly harvested potatoes should be kept in the refrigerator in a brown paper bag.

Basil or Chives

Blackberry Meadows, Pucker Brush Farm or River View Farm

Store:  To keep basil fresh, trim the stems and place it in a glass or jar of water, just like cut flowers.  Don’t refrigerate your basil, the delicate leaves may turn black.  Wrap chives loosely in plastic wrap or a plastic bag and place them in the warmest part of the refrigerator.
